Newport County AFC

Following the Nationwide Conference South, match Newport County v Lewes played on the 27th January 2007, the Football Association of Wales received a complaint from Lewes FC in relation to alleged racist or racially motivated comments made by Newport County supporters and a Newport County player towards a Lewes player during the game. The complaint also referred to an allegation of misconduct by Newport County supporters following the conclusion of the match, specifically that Lewes FC players were spat at by a Newport County supporter whilst leaving the field of play following the conclusion of the match. None of the appointed match officials witnessed these events.

Newport County FC, in response, strenuously denied the allegations regarding racist or racially motivated comments by its supporters and player and made a number of counter allegations against the conduct of the Lewes FC players. These counter allegations were passed onto The Football Association for their consideration.

Both clubs co-operated fully with the investigation and provided numerous statements and documents to the Football Association of Wales. However, having carefully considered all of the evidence available, it has been determined by both Associations that no further action should be taken against either club.

In relation to the allegations of spitting, Newport County have undertaken their own internal investigation into this matter and have assured the Football Association of Wales that any supporter identified will be immediately banned from Newport Stadium.

It is hoped that both clubs can now put these matters behind them and continue to provide their active support of the national campaign Kick Racism Out of Football.
