1884 –AMHEUS / 1884 –PROBABLY NOT Rhywfaint o ddirgelwch fu union amgylchiadau ffurfio Clwb Pêl-droed Porthmadog. Am nifer o flynyddoedd mae’r clwb wedi cefnogi’r syniad mai yn 1884 y ffurfiwyd y clwb a dyna’r flwyddyn sy’n ymddangos ar fathodyn y clwb. Mae ymchwil diweddar yn taflu amheuaeth ar y ddamcaniaeth hon sy’n awgrymu fod y clwb wedi’i ffurfio ynghynt na hyn. Ymddangosodd y cyfeiriad cyntaf ym mhapur newydd y North Wales Chronicle ar 26 Hydref 1872. Mewn erthygl byr dywedwyd “Mewn cyfarfod, a alwyd yn Porthmadoc gan H L Price ar nos Lun yr 21ain, penderfynwyd ffurfio clwb pêl. Rheolir y clwb gan bwyllgor o saith ....” Wythnos yn ddiweddarach eglurodd y North Wales Chronicle i’w darllenwyr fel hyn: “Yn ein rhifyn diwethaf wrth gyhoeddi ffurfio clwb newydd gadwyd y gair “Droed” allan. Rym yn hapus i ddweud fod y clwb yn debygol o ddenu cefnogaeth dda.” Mae’r Caernarfon & Denbigh Herald o’r un wythnos yn cadarnhau genedigaeth y clwb ac yn awgrymu fod aelodau clwb criced y dref wedi bod y rhan o’r ffurfiant. Cafodd ei dderbyn am flynyddoedd mae ffug wawr oedd hon, gyda’r clwb yn dod i ben ar ôl y diddordeb cychwynnol. Chwaraeodd y clwb yma ei gêm gyntaf yn erbyn Caernarfon pedwar mis yn ddiweddarach ar 13 Chwefror, 1873 ac mae’r adroddiad yn y Chronicle yn cadarnhau fod clwb Porthmadog wedi defnyddio fersiwn y Gymdeithas Bêl-droed o reolau’r gêm. Mae ymchwil pellach yn cadarnhau fod y clwb hwn wedi aros mewn bodolaeth tan o leiaf 1877 ond allai fod yn hirach na hyn ond bydd angen mwy o ymchwil. Yn y North Wales Chronicle ar 17 Medi 1881 mae o’n dweud fod “Clwb Pêl-droed Madog wedi ei ail ffurfio ddydd Llun,” yn awgrym fod y clwb wedi dod i ben rhwng 1877 ac 1881. Mae’n amlwg fod clwb 1881 wedi bodoli mewn rhyw ffurf tan y presennol. Mae angen llawer mwy o ymchwil, yn arbennig am y cyfnod o 1885 i 1895, a hefyd am y cyfnod rhwng 1905 a’r 1920au pan fod hynt a helynt y clwb yn aneglur. Gobeithio, yn ystod y blynyddoedd nesaf, bydd modd dod o hyd i ddarlun cliriach o hanes y clwb a byddai’n dda medru cynhyrchu hanes diffiniol o’r clwb ar gyfer y pen-blwydd yn 150 yn 2022. Erbyn rŵan mae’r hyn sy’n wybyddus am hanes y clwb yn llenwi 9 ffeil fawr lever arch ac mae’n annhebyg ein bod wedi cyrraedd at hanner y ffordd eto! 1884 –PROBABLY NOT The exact circumstances surrounding the formation of Porthmadog Football Club have been something of a mystery. For many years the club have promoted the notion that it was formed in 1884 the year even features on the club badge. Recent research has cast doubt on this theory and indicates that the club was formed earlier. The first known reference appears in the North Wales Chronicle newspaper on October 26th, 1872. A brief article relates the following; “On Monday evening the 21st inst. a meeting convened by H L Price was held at Portmadoc when it was decided to form a ball club. The club is to be managed by a committee of seven ....” A week later the North Wales Chronicle helpfully clarified matters for the readers thus: “In announcing in our last issue the formation of the new club we omitted the word ‘Foot’. We are glad to understand that it is likely to be well patronised.” The Caernarfon and Denbigh Herald, from the same week, confirms the birth of the club and suggests that members of the town’s cricket club were involved in its creation. It has been assumed for many years that this was merely a false dawn, which soon died out after the initial interest. This club played its first match against Caernarfon four months later on February 13th, 1873 and the report of the match in the Chronicle confirms that the Porthmadog club played the Football Association rules of the game. Further recent research confirms that this club existed until at least 1877, but indeed may even be later with further research required. The North Wales Chronicle of September 17th 1881 states that the “Madog Football Club was reconstituted last Monday” suggesting that the original club may have folded between 1887 and 1881. It seems clear that this 1881 club then existed in some form or another up to the present day. Much more research is required especially on the period between 1885 and 1895 and also from 1905 to the 1920s when the fate of the club is not clear. Hopefully over the next few years it will be possible to unearth a clearer picture of the club’s history and it would be nice to produce a definitive history of the club to coincide with its 150th birthday in 2022. That which is known of the history of the club already fills 9 substantial lever arch files and we are probably not half way yet! |
