19/05/09 Bwrdd y Gynghrair i gyfarfod / WPL Board to meet ![]() We understand that a meeting of the Welsh Premier League Board has been arranged for Thursday (May 21st) when board members will presumably receive a report from their sole representative on the FAW Council, Mike Harris of TNS. With three clubs Cefn Druids, Porthmadog and Prestatyn having already expressed their opposition to the decision of the Council there will surely be some heated debate. Of great interest will be the response of the 7 clubs who already hold Domestic Licenses. Success in the here and now does not always last, as Barry Town, Inter Cardiff, Conwy United and Cwmbran will no doubt testify, so what goes on below the top ten must concern all clubs. But even in a meeting of the League Board the final decision will lie with the FAW who hold a golden vote. Let’s hope on this occasion they will want to listen to reason. 18/05/09 Canlyniad y Lotri Wythnosol / Weekly Draw Result Enillydd gwobr wythnos 20 o £100 yn Lotri Wythnos Clwb Pêl-droed Porthmadog yw rhif 121 Nellie Ballard. Dan-16 v Castell Nedd gyda’r gic gyntaf am 2.30 pm. Bydd y gwobrau yn cael eu cyflwyno ar ddiwedd pob gêm i’r enillwyr a hefyd i’r clwb sydd yn ail. Bu hwn yn dymor o lwyddiant rhyfeddol i’r Academi i’r chwaraewyr, yr hyfforddwyr ac i’r gweinyddwyr, a dymunwn pob llwyddiant iddyn nhw dydd Sul nesaf. Gobeithio y cawn gefnogaeth dda. Bu hon yn wythnos pan fod penderfyniadau pellgyrhaeddol, a fydd yn effeithio dyfodol y gêm yng Nghymru, yn cael eu gwneud. Tybed, wrth wneud eu penderfyniad gorffwyll, faint o ystyriaeth a rhoddwyd i ariannu academi, fel un Port, i’r dyfodol? Os na fydd y Gymdeithas Bêl-droed yn ariannu ac yn cynnal pob academi yn ddigonol byddant yn methu yn eu cyfrifoldeb am ddatblygu’r gêm, yng Nghymru, ymysg Ieuenctid. All finals of the Academies Cup will be played at Latham Park, Newtown on Sunday 24th. May. Porthmadog teams are involved in two out of the three finals and will play their finals as follows: Under 12s vs Merthyr Tydfil. KO 11.30am Under 16s vs Neath FC KO 2.30pm Trophies will be awarded after each game with medals for winners and runners up. It has been a season of outstanding achievement for the Academy its players coaches and administration and we wish the two teams all the best next Sunday. They deserve to be well supported. In a week when far reaching decisions have been taken which will affect the future of the game in Wales how much consideration was given to the future funding of Academies when the FAW Council made their crackpot decision. If these Academies are not properly funded the FAW will have failed in their responsibility to develop the game amongst youngsters in Wales 17/05/09 Meilir Owen yn amau gwerth y Deg Disglair / Meilir Owen doubts value of Super 10 ![]() Gofynnodd Meilir Owen, “Ar ba sail y daethpwyd i’r casgliad fod torri i ddeg clwb yn mynd i arwain at wella safonau? Pa ymchwil sydd wedi i wneud?” Crybwyllodd enghreifftiau Barri, Cwmbrân ac Inter Caerdydd, pob un wedi ddiflannu fel seren wib yn dilyn llwyddiant dros dro yn unig. “Clybiau sydd wedi dyfalbarhau ac wedi eu rhedeg yn dda ac yn ddarbodus ydy dyfodol y gynghrair. “Beth ydy nod y gynghrair?” gofynnodd. “ Gwella safonau pêl-droed yng Nghymru ynteu plesio UEFA drwy wneud ychydig yn well yn Ewrop heb byth lwyddo i gystadlu gyda’r gwledydd mawr? Mae’n amlwg fod Meilir Owen o’r farn fod clybiau sydd wedi eu gwreiddio yn eu cymunedau a fwy i gynnig na’r clybiau hynny sydd yn derbyn chwistrelliad o bres mawr dros dro. Ond y clybiau cymunedol yma fydd yn colli allan o dan y drefn newydd heb yr ysgogiad o ennill dyrchafiad. Meilir Owen former Porthmadog manager, and now a Radio Cymru pundit, likened the decision of the smaller northern clubs, to vote for the Super Ten option, to a man voting for his own execution. Phil Jones, Port chairman also appearing on the discussion programme ‘Taro’r Post’, added that when Porthmadog proposed to the league committee that the Super Ten option be reconsidered they failed to even get a seconder so that their proposal could be put to the vote. “Clubs had to an extent brought this on their own heads,” he said “with many putting their money into paying for players rather than develop their clubs and stadia.” Meilir Owen asked, “On what basis has the decision to cut the league to 10 clubs been made? What research has been undertaken to show that this is the way to go?” He cited the examples of Barry Town, Cwmbran and Inter Cardiff -clubs who disappeared from the scene after a short period of prominence. He said that in the longer term smaller clubs, who have stuck to the task and been careful with their hard earned cash, are more important to the future of the league. “What is the FAW aiming to achieve?” he asks. “Is it to improve standards of football in Wales or just to impress UEFA and make small advances in Europe without ever being able to compete with the larger countries? It is clear that Meilir Owen feels that the community based clubs, who are in danger of being excluded without the incentive of promotion, have more to offer than those clubs who get a sudden influx of cash that might not be there in the future. 14/05/09 Y clwb yn ymateb i benderfyniad yr FAW / Club responds to FAW decision ![]() Porthmadog FC have reacted with shock and anger at the FAW decision to reduce the Welsh Premier League to 10 clubs as of 2010/2011 and relegate the remaining 8 clubs to the Cymru Alliance and Welsh League Division 1. Porthmadog Secretary Gerallt Owen voiced his anger by saying "This was not what the clubs agreed to in Oswestry last year. The two Leagues of 10 was adopted so that the future viability of the 8 clubs not in the so called “Super 10” could be ensured. These 8 clubs are now thrown to the wolves with no regard for their future.” He added “What really angers me is that the Academy status of the eight clubs will now be lost with hundreds of young players between 8 and 16 deprived of the opportunity to improve and develop as footballers, how does this benefit Welsh football. The decision in my view is the culmination of a long held aim of the FAW to reduce the League so that the paltry financial support it gives the League will go further and provide it with the opportunity in future to reduce this backing even further. All the hard work and effort of so many people has now been totally undermined by the FAW. These people have absolutely no idea of the sheer hard work that goes on to maintain the clubs. We at Porthmadog FC have invested tens of thousands of pounds less than two years ago in building a Social club which would provide long term financial stability for the club, but this arbitrary and unilateral decision puts the club’s whole future in grave jeopardy. The loss of Welsh Premier status will mean a severe reduction in income. I would hope that an urgent meeting of clubs can be held to try and force the FAW to overturn this decision, even using the threat of legal action or even strike action, however it remains to be seen whether the bigger clubs will give a second thought to the rest of the clubs and we may well be fighting a losing battle, but I feel a deep sense of betrayal.” 14/05/09 Diddymu’r ffenestr drosglwyddo? / Transfer window scrapped? ![]() It is reported on the Cymru Alliance website that the transfer window for all directly affiliated leagues apart from the Welsh Premier has been scrapped. This is another body blow to The Welsh Premier League. It means that these Leagues can register players from June 1st 2009 up until the last Thursday in March 2010, while the Welsh Premier League can only do so from June 1st to 1st September and again in January. The consequence of this for clubs in north Wales is that Cymru Alliance clubs will be able to pick off fringe players from Welsh Premier sides while they will not be able to replace them. The only way to alleviate this is to keep massive squads or put all players on contract. When confronted on this matter an FAW official suggested that all players will have to be on contract, however the financial implications of this is massive for smaller clubs who have tended to have the majority of their players on non-contract forms. Gerallt Owen said “It beggars belief that such a decision could be taken with no consultation and just underlines the depth of ignorance of how Welsh Premier League clubs operate from the FAW. This decision together with the scrapping of the second-tier means the FAW have undermined 16 years of development of the Welsh Premier League and ensured that smaller clubs are doomed possibly to oblivion, it makes you wonder if the FAW are fit for purpose, namely running Welsh football for the benefit of all”. 13/05/09 Penderfyniad y Gymdeithas a chanlyniadau mawr / Super 10 decision has serious consequences ![]() Unwaith aiff y clybiau yma i lawr ychydig iawn o obaith fydd am ddyrchafiad wedyn. Mae yr un fath yn wir am y clybiau yn y pyramid sydd ac uchelgais, bydd y drws yn cau. Bydd grantiau’r gymdeithas yn mynd i’r 10, a fydd neb arall yn medru cystadlu. Bydd y torfeydd ar i lawr a fydd yna ddim cyfiawnhad dros wario ar welliannau diangen. Bydd y Deg Disglair yn aros yn eu lle heb obaith am ddyrchafiad i’r gweddill, a felly neb yn mynd i lawr chwaith. Dyma mae’n siwr mae’r dynion mewn siwtiau’n ddymuno eu weld. Ni fydd Academïau y clybiau hyn yn cael eu hariannu gan y Gymdeithas a bydd y ieuenctid yn cael eu gadael i lawr yn ddrwg. (Barn y wefan yn unig ydy hyn ac nid y clwb a’u swyddogion.) ![]() Once again the FAW has decided to change the rules midway through the game and has badly let down member clubs. It has seriously abused the power of its veto to overrule the decision of the WPL clubs and Board. The FAW were warned some time ago that there were serious problems with the second tier concept but instead of tackling the matter and looking for a solution they have taken an axe to it and amputated the unwanted appendage. They could and should have taken a broader look at the pyramid and considered a ‘split season’ solution which would have achieved an elite without such a dramatic reduction in the number of clubs. Instead the FAW has chosen to remind us of their lack of interest in the domestic game. Once they have been demoted these clubs, together with ambitious clubs in the pyramid, will find little hope of promotion. The FAW grants for improvement will be shared amongst 10 and the rest will wither unable to compete. Gates will drop even further and it will not be sensible to make improvements which will no longer be needed. The Super 10 will become a closed shop which is probably what the men in suits want to happen. The Academies of the discarded 8 will no longer be financed and youngsters will be badly let down. (These are the views of the website and don’t necessarily represent the views of the club or its officials.) 12/05/09 Dan-14 yn colli allan / Under-14s lose out ![]() I gael manylion llawn am dymor gwych yr academi cliciwch yma Two goals in the 15 minutes immediately after half-time put Cefn Druids in control of last night’s (May 11) Welsh Academies Cup semi-final at the Traeth. In the opening half the Port youngsters had been the more threatening and will rue the fact that they failed to take advantage of the chances which they created resulting from some good approach play. Though both keepers had to pull off some smart saves it remained scoreless at half-time. From the start of the second period the Druids upped the pace and made good use of the stiff breeze on their backs to launch more direct attacks. Five minutes into the second period a fine through ball split open the home defence and was well taken by the Druids front man to open the scoring. 10 minutes later they added a second thanks to a slick move finished with a good header from 10 yards. To their credit the Port lads stuck to their task against a big forceful Druids outfit, but though they came back to create a few late chances this was the Druids’ night. They added a third with a powerful 30 yard strike in injury time. Best of luck to Cefn in the final. Final score: Porthmadog 0 Cefn Druids 3. These included two matches against Blaenau Ffestiniog, the club who have taken the 2008/09 Teejac Gwynedd League title. Congratulations to Blaenau who have proved themselves worthy champions and we wish them well in the Welsh Alliance. The two games against Blaenau proved to be close affairs though conceding late goals, on both occasions, allowed the points to slip away from the Traeth team. At the Traeth Cai Jones’s goal on 64 minutes brought the scores level after Gareth Roberts had put Blaenau ahead in the first half. But Blaenau snatched all three points thanks to Ceri Roberts’s hotly disputed late goal. At Cae Clyd the teams had scored a goal each within 7 minutes of the start with Danny Rylance’s opener coming after only 2 minutes. With only 8 minutes left Keiron Ellis secured all three points for Blaenau. The month had opened with a win against Real Llandudno when a single goal was enough to secure the points. The other victory during the month came at home to Llanfairfechan. In the opening half Cai Jones opened the scoring but Llanfairfechan drew level after half an hour only for Cai Jones to restore the lead before the interval. Danny Rylance added a third after the hour mark and Hardman scored a consolation for the coast team making the final score 3-2. The same score line gave Gwalchmai 3 points at the Traeth with Guto Davies scoring from the spot and Mark Bridge adding the other Port goal. The other game in April produced a home 2-2 draw with Bontnewydd. Steven Jones scored from the spot with Dylan Smith getting the second. 05/05/09 Canlyniad y Lotri Wythnosol / Weekly Draw Result Enillydd gwobr wythnos 18 o £100 yn Lotri Wythnos Clwb Pêl-droed Porthmadog yw rhif 152 Gwenda Davies o Gellilydan. The score line does not tell the whole story as the third Port goal came deep into injury time when a cross from the right was played into the box for Cai Jones to settle the game with a powerful strike. Port had started the game well and for the first 20 minutes looked the more likely to open the scoring but after 25 minutes the Nomads took advantage of an error to open the scoring. From then on to half time the Nomads took charge and might have increased their lead. But straight from the start of the second period Port piled on the pressure and when a Nomads defender handled in the box Iwan Lane levelled the scores with a well struck 55th minute spot kick. Play was end to end but with 67 minutes gone Cai Jones slipped the ball through for the hard working Jac Jones to burst into the box and take his chance well putting Port in the driving seat. The final ten minutes was full of tension as the Nomads fought hard to get back on level terms and this continued until Cai Jones finally made the game safe. 29/04/09 Canlyniadau’r Tote Misol a’r Lotri Wythnosol / Monthly Tote and Weekly Draw Results Tynnwyd rhifau Tote Misol Clwb Cymdeithasol Pêl-droed Porthmadog ar gyfer mis Ebrill yn y Ganolfan ar nos Wener 24 Ebrill. Nid yw’n cael sefyllfa lle mae’r clwb wedi cadw eu hun i fyny o drwch blewyn am yr ail dymor yn olynol yn un i fod yn falch ohono. Dywedodd wrth ‘Yr Herald’, “Pan ges i’r swydd dywedodd y cadeirydd ‘gwna’n siwr ein bod yn aros i fyny’ a llwyddo’n ni wneud hynny. Mae’r tablau yn dweud y gwir ac mae Port wedi gorffen yn drydydd o’r gwaelod dau dymor yn olynol. “Bydd rhaid cryfhau cryn dipyn ac mae’r garfan yn rhy fach. Ni allwch chi gystadlu ar y lefel yma gyda 12 neu 13 o chwaraewyr, yn enwedig pan fydd yna anafiadau a gwaharddiadau. Rhaid cynyddu maint y garfan a hefyd gwella’r ansawdd.” Ond mae’n ymwybodol fod hyn yn mynd i gostio i’r clwb ond roedd yn uchel ei ganmoliaeth o ymdrechion cefnogwyr a gwirfoddolwyr y Traeth. “Mae strwythur a threfn y clwb o’r radd uchaf ac mae’r ffordd mae’r clwb yn cael ei rhedeg ymysg goreuon yn y gynghrair. “Ond rwy’n siwr fod pawb yn derbyn fod y clwb wedi tangyflawni ar y cae yn ystod y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf a gobeithio y byddai i’n gallu newid hyn yn ystod y tymor nesaf.” Supporters were delighted, prior to kick off on Saturday, to hear the news that Tomi Morgan has committed himself to the post of manager at the Traeth for the coming season and is already planning ahead. His decision means that the club can now look forward to a period of stability under an experienced manager. Tomi is fully aware of the task facing him. He finds nothing to be proud of in just surviving as Port have done for the second successive season. Talking to the ‘Herald’ he said, "When I got the job, the chairman said ‘make sure we stay up’ and we have managed to do that. But league tables don’t lie and Porthmadog have now finished third from bottom for two years running. "We need to strengthen quite a bit because we are short on numbers. Having to rely on around 12 or 13 players you simply cannot compete at this level with such a small squad, particularly when injuries and suspensions kick in, so we need to get the numbers up and try to improve on the quality as well." But he was fully aware that this would cost the club and he could not praise highly enough the efforts of supporters and back room volunteers at the Traeth. "The infrastructure here and the set-up is absolutely top drawer and as far as the way the club is run it is right up there with the best in the league. "But I’m sure everyone accepts that the club has probably under-performed on the field in the past couple of years and hopefully I can rectify that next season. 25/04/09 Hat-tric arall i Jiws /Another Jiws hat-trick ![]() Mae sgorio 24 o goliau UGC mewn tîm sydd wedi gorfod brwydro yn y gwaelodion drwy’r tymor ymysg ei lwyddiannau mwyaf - a hynny mewn gyrfa sy’n llawn llwyddiant. He was also the supporters’ player of the season and, to the delight of the excellent turn out in the clubhouse, received a special award of a presentation clock to mark his remarkable 300th WPL goal. When making the presentation chairman Phil Jones commented, “This is a record few, if any of us, will see equalled in our lifetime.” To score 24 WPL goals - making him third in the WPL list of scorers for 2008/09 behind Rhys Griffiths and Martin Rose - in a team which has struggled throughout the season must rank amongst Jiws’s greatest achievements in a career full of outstanding achievements. It is all the more remarkable therefore that no manager in the Daily Post area saw fit to nominate him as their player of the season. But we all love him at the Traeth and are already looking towards the 350! 23/04/09 Timau Academi yn y rownd gynderfynol / Academy teams in semi-finals Heb unrhyw amheuaeth llwyddiant mawr y tymor fu perfformiadau arbennig tair carfan oed yr Academi.
