Port v Airbus - 02/09/00

A warm welcome to our third home game of the season, today's opponents Airbus UK will provide another stern test for our depleted squad. With six players on the injury list it has proved a bit of a juggling act to ensure fourteen fit players. Most of the players are on the mend but most are unlikely to return to action until next week at the earliest. Steven Pugh has reported that the hamstring has improved while both Warren and Ryan are also a week away from fitness at least. Stuart and Nigel are making the best progress and will make it to the bench at least today. Neil Roberts is the furthest away from a return, he faces another month on the sidelines.

The tragic circumstances surrounding the late postponement of Wednesday night certainly puts football very much into perspective. Immediately of learning what had happened I felt the only possible outcome was to postpone the match. The Llangefni players were naturally shocked and saddened by the news and were in no frame of mind to play football. We look forward to rearranging the match later in the season.

Under the circumstances I was pleased with the performance and elated with the result on Saturday. Halkyn made it very hard for us, they got bodies behind the ball and made it hard for us to get any kind of rhythm. The attitude of the lads was spot on as they battled to the end. Our will to win and fitness carried us through.

The current injury problems have forced me to look at the players available to me and one or two from the Reserves have caught the eye, however I'm somewhat loathe to break John's team up especially so early in the season. Because of Caernarfon & District rules players can only play a certain amount of senior games or they become ineligible for League and Cup matches. This was the case last season when Emyr Jones, Alan Jones and Steven Paul Williams all missed out on the Reserves Cup triumphs because they had played too many games for the first team. It is important to get the right balance, Reserve team players need the encouragement of being called into the first team but they also need to remain available for the Reserves. I will be working with John to ensure that we strike the right balance. I as much as anybody wants to see young players come through and challenge for first team places. Remember also that many of the players I have recruited are also young and will hopefully play for the club for many years. Please enjoy the game and maintain your support of the players it was excellent on Saturday.
