Port v Bangor - 08/08/01

A warm welcome to you all to this evening's match against Bangor City. I am grateful to Bangor City for agreeing to come down for the game. I would like to take this opportunity to wish new manager Peter Davenport the best of luck for the coming season. As an old club of mine I was pleased that they survived in the League of Wales and hope they have a good season this time round.
Personally I have been very happy with the way preseason has gone. I have tried to make the matches progressively harder, starting with two Gwynedd League teams, then two Welsh 'League teams and then two League of Wales sides. The matches have also given me a chance to have a look at a number of young players from the Reserves as well as one or two trialists. Undoubtedly there are good young players coming through, hopefully they will break through into the first team this season. However it will be the North Wales Floodlight League which will be useful in developing these players. The new League will be predominantly for under 21 players and so will give them a good standard of football against the best in that age group in north Wales. This will be a good stepping stone to progress towards first team football. For players like Idan, Matthew and the like it will be ideal.
The results of these friendliest have been good but that is not what is important; having a look at potential recruits, improving fitness and sharpness and getting all the players to play and get to know each other is what is important. I have had a look at over 20 players and in particular the Reserve team players have had the opportunity to get to know the first team squad' and if I do call them up they will be much better prepared.
Let's hope that tonight's game is a good entertaining match and that you all enjoy yourselves. If you do make sure that you come back and support us on August l 8th for the big kick off, we need your support.
