Port v Llandudno - 25/08/99

At the start of every season each team and their supporters have high hopes and expectations for the season ahead, with instant predictions on every’ new player and formations played, but the reality is that nothing is won or lost in August, though a good start to the season always helps. Tonight’s visitors Llandudno had an excellent first game winning 4-0 at Lex, never an easy place to get a result, so obviously their confidence will be sky high going into tonight’s match. We also started well away at Buckley, 2 up with 20 minutes left only to concede two late goals to share the spoils, shades of last season when on numerous occasions we lost concentration late on to gift points to the opposition.

If we are to mount a serious challenge this time around we must address this issue and become meaner in our attitude. A big pointer to the season will be at the end of September when most teams will have played nearly a third of their fixtures. Already Mostyn have dropped out of the League with Cemaes and Denbigh both denying press rumours that they may both follow suit, shades of last season again when Knighton and Penrhyncoch dropped out.

During the close season a lot of work has taken place at Y Traeth along with our new signings, Viv Williams has joined our Football in the Community Scheme full time as Anglesey coach, Viv is now involved in coaching with the first team, its early to put pressure on him but I see him as a potential Porthmadog manager of the future. At the moment he is happy to get his first coaching position and learning the ropes, getting used to the phone ringing non stop with cry offs, problems with transport etc. As a player you don’t realise the demands on your time, and when you get a few dodgy results you wonder whether all the grief is worth it.

All the players put in a hard pre-season between training and playing seven pre-season match-es. I am pleased with the fitness level of the squad and the quality, they just need the confidence to relax and play their football and I am sure we are in for some good quality football.

Once again our small squad of directors and helpers have put in a lot of effort since we last kicked a ball in anger, our commercial activities of boot sales, children’s disco, bingo, advert sales etc. is second to none and I believe our Supporters Club are also doing well with their Summer Draw. Excellent, well done everybody, now all we need is a main sponsor.

The pitch is again in fantastic condition and the concrete path around the ground is a great improvement, if we ever lose our Chairman Bob Havelock we will need an army to replace him. Well it’s all about the football now, good results will keep every-thing going forward, poor results will have the reverse effect, so lets hope for a good season. It will not be easy because the Cymru Alliance is a strong League with a number of good teams, but we will give it our best shot, of that you can be sure. Enjoy the match.
