Port v Treffynon / Holywell - 31/03/02

It has been a tough time for us since our last home game. Losing against Holyhead was a bitter disappointment to me and Osian. Despite playing well against Welshpool and certainly deserving something from the game it was disappointing to lose, and again against Ruthin we under performed. However last Saturday's game at Airbus certainly showed the battling spirit amongst the players. I felt we were rather unfortunate to go down to 10 men, the Airbus player made the most of the situation and didn't even receive a yellow card for his dangerous initial challenge on Mike Foster that sent him flying over the pitch side railings. The 10 men fought hard for the win. I feared the worst when we went 2-1 down but Steve Pugh and Carl Owen scored to give us an excellent victory.
As you are all aware I have allowed a number of players to leave the club. Martin Jones has also had to leave due to increased work commitments. Both Osian and myself felt that the players we drafted in would improve the squad but one or two in particular didn't perform up to expectations. Realistically we are now unlikely to challenge for a top two spot and therefore we have decided to start building for the future by giving local players from the Gwynedd area a chance to show what they can do in the eleven matches that remain. Certainly some of the players in the Reserves will be given a go, while I am also in the process of signing one or two others before the deadline who hopefully will add to the current squad of players. Let's hope that we can unearth one or two nuggets who will be regular first team players next season and for seasons to come.
Nobody is more disappointed than myself as how the past couple of weeks have worked out. My expectations and the expectations of the club are high, I believed that the squad could have been challenging to the bitter end but that now seems unlikely. There remains a lot to play for, 33 points in fact and we will be fighting for each and everyone of them, you can be sure of that.
