Tymor Rhyfeddol – y Ffeithiau / A Fantastic Season – the Facts (Gareth Williams)

Saesneg / English.

Daeth tymor byth gofiadwy i ben – tymor nad oedd y dilynwyr ffyddlon am weld yn gorffen. Dyma dymor sydd wedi efelychu oes aur y pumdegau a’r saithdegau. Cafodd dilynwyr lleol y bêl gron, na chawsant hyd i’r ffordd lawr i’r Traeth mewn tymor arbennig, golled fawr. Chwaraewyd gyda steil a bu ymroddiad y garfan a’r tim rheoli yn wych.

Mae’r ffeithiau yn cadarnhau y gosodiad yma.

Ennill y Gynghrair, Cwpan y Gynghrair a Chwpan Her yr Arfordir ydy ffeithiau moel y tymor ond mae yna ffeithiau eraill, llai amlwg, sydd wedi gwneud y tymor yn un mor gofiadwy.

Dengys y tabl fod Port wedi sgorio 104 o goliau cynghrair sef 25 yn fwy na neb arall.

Cafodd Carl Owen dymor rhyfeddol yn llwyddo i gael ei hun o dan bob pêl -cic wyllt o’r cefn neu peli wedi ei mesur yn ofalus. Fo oedd y prif sgoriwr am y tymor gyda 26 o goliau. Gwelwn ansawdd y tim o’r nifer y chwaraewyr a lwyddodd i sgorio. Sgoriodd wyth o chwaraewyr ddeg gôl neu fwy ( Carl Owen, Steve Pugh, Gareth Caughter, Dafydd Evans, Dave Farr, Tony Williams, Gareth Parry a Lee Webber). Cafodd Steve Pugh rediad arbennig gyda throad y flwyddyn pan sgoriodd naw gol mewn saith gem.

Cybyddlyd oedd yr amddiffyn yn gollwng ond 19 o goliau mewn 32 o gemau cynghrair. Roedd hyn bymtheg yn llai na Bwcle, y gorau o’r gweddill. Er fod amddiffyn yn dasg i’r tim cyfan, nid oes modd canmol y pedwar yn y cefn ddigon uchel ( John Gwynfor, Danny Hughes, Lee Webber, Mike Foster a Campbell Harrison pan frifwyd Danny Hughes) a’r dibynadwy Gerard McGuigan tu ôl iddynt.

Y rhan o’r tim a ddangosodd y datblygiad mwyaf oedd canol y cae gyda’u rhedeg dibaid yn cefnogi yr amddiffyn a’r ymosod. Yn ogystal a’i chwarae creadigol, sgoriodd Dafydd Evans ddeuddeg gôl, y mwyafrif o’r smotyn, a fo yn ddigamsyniol oedd brenin y ciciau cosb. Chwaraewr newydd, a ddaeth yn rhan anhepgor o’r tim, oedd Gareth Parry a gyfranodd goliau yn reolaidd hefyd. Pwy all anghofio gôl arbennig Richie Owen yn rhoi prawf ar rwydi Bwcle!

Rhaid nodi perfformiadau dau o ieuenctid y clwb mewn gemau diwedd y tymor. Dangosodd Barry Evans addewid mawr yn ei berfformiadau yn erbyn Helygain a Llandudno, a sgoriodd Dylan Jones gôl allweddol yn erbyn Llandudno. Tanlinellodd Dylan ei addewid drwy sgorio’r gôl a sicrhaodd Cwpan y Gynghrair i Port.

Mae ennill eich gemau chwe phwynt yn angenrheidiol er mwyn sicrhau dyrchafiad. Gwnaeth Port y dwbl dros eu gwrthwynebwyr agosaf, Llandudno, Bwcle a Llangefni. Yn wir, pan gynhwysir y gemau cwpan, curwyd Llandudno bedair gwaith a Bwcle a Llangefni dair gwaith yr un.

Bu’r bygythiad o dynnu 21 pwynt yn hongian uwch eu pennau am fisoedd. Er hyn, parhaodd y tim i sicrhau buddugoliaeth ar ben buddugoliaeth gan gasglu 19 yn fwy o bwyntiau na Llandudno yn yr ail safle. Yn wir, pe byddai angen, teimlaf yn siwr y byddent wedi sicrhau y 21 pwynt oedd angen.

Enillodd Port 28 allan o’r 32 gem gynghrair. Adre, enillwyd pob un o’r 16 o gemau cynghrair. AirBus a Helygain yn unig a lwyddodd i’w curo mewn gem gynghrair. Fflint a Chaergybi oedd yr unig glybiau i sicrhau gêm gyfartal.

Glantraeth o’r Welsh Alliance oedd yr unig glwb i’w curo mewn gêm gwpan sef Cwpan Cymru.

Efallai mai perfformiad y tymor oedd hwnnw ar Ffordd Llanelian pan chwalwyd Bae Colwyn o 4-1. Cafwyd pedair gôl wych gan gynnwys un hynod o gelfydd gan Campbell Harrison.

Bu’r ddisgyblaeth yn arbennig gyda neb yn derbyn cerdyn coch yn ystod y tymor. Maent felly yn haeddiannol yn derbyn gwobr Tim y Flwyddyn y Gynghrair Undebol. Mae hyn yn glod mawr i’r garfan gyfan ac, fel y dywedwyd ar y dudalen drafod y safle, i’r rheolwr Viv Williams.

Bu ond un anaf tymor hir, sef i Danny Hughes a dorrodd asgwrn yn ei droed. Arwydd yw hyn o ffitrwydd y tim sydd wedi eu paratoi mor drwyadl gan Osian Roberts. Esiampl o’r ymroddiad yma yw y capten Mike Foster sydd wedi chwarae pob gem ond un yn ystod y tymor ac yn yr un gem honno roedd ar y fainc yn ysu i gael dod i’r cae. Sawl gôl ddaeth o giciau cornel Mike eleni? Piti nad oes anorac pel droed wedi bod yn cadw cyfri.

Ymgorfforiad o ysbryd y clwb ydy Lee Webber, chwaraewr y flwyddyn y cefnogwyr, a ddaliodd i chwarae er yn dioddef o’r eryr yn ei lygad.

Llwyddiant carfan gyfan oedd y tymor, a llongyfarchiadau i bawb a gynrychiolodd y clwb.

Gosodwyd y dasg i Viv Williams i ddychwelyd y clwb i Uwch Gyngrhair Gymru. Mae cam cyntaf y chwyldro tawel wedi ei gwblhau ond ni fydd Viv yn diystyrru y sialens lem, sydd o’i flaen, er mwyn sefydlu’r clwb ar lefel uwch. Diolch iddo a phob lwc ar gyfer y tymor nesaf.

English

This has truly been a memorable season -and for those who have followed Port regularly it was a season that we did not want to end. It is a season which has seen Port emulate the glory years of the fifties and seventies. For those local football followers who have failed to find their way to the Traeth during this remarkable season you have certainly missed a treat where the style of football played and the commitment of the squad and management has been outstanding.

The facts of this season prove this beyond doubt.

The winning of the treble of League, League Cup and North Wales Coast Challenge Cup is the obvious sign of a remarkable season but there are many more less obvious facts which help to make it unforgettable.

The League table tells us that 104 league goals have been scored -25 more than anyone else.

Carl Owen, who enjoyed an outstanding season seeming to get on the end of everything, wild clearance or quality through ball, topped the scoring list with 26 goals. The quality of the team was shown, however, by the number of players who got on the scoring list. Eight players, in all, reached double figures ( Carl Owen, Steve Pugh, Gareth Caughter, Dafydd Evans, Dave Farr, Tony Williams, Gareth Parry and Lee Webber). Steve Pugh at the turn of the year had a remarkable run when he scored 9 goals in seven games.

Only a miserly 19 league goals were conceded in 32 league games. This was 15 less than Buckley who were the best of the rest. They kept 17 clean sheets in 32 league matches. Though defending is a task for the whole team no praise is high enough for the wonderful back-four ( John Gwynfor, Danny Hughes, Lee Webber, Mike Foster and Campbell Harrison following the injury to Danny Hughes) and behind them the reliable Gerard McGuigan.

The midfield was probably the most improved section of the team with their non stop running, supporting both in defence and attack. Dafydd Evans the playmaker chipped in with an invaluable 12 goals mainly from the spot where he was the undisputed penalty king. Gareth Parry was the season’s revelation and scored regularly as well. As for Richie Owen who will forget his net buster at Buckley?

Mention must be made of two young players who made debuts at the tail end of the season. Barry Evans, who gave such promising displays in the league games against Halkyn and Llandudno, and Dylan Jones who scored an excellent clincher at Llandudno. Dylan also emphatically underlined his promise with a match-winning goal in the League Cup final.

Winning your 6 pointers is vital in a promotion race. Port completed the double over their nearest rivals Llandudno, Buckley and Llangefni. In fact, when cup matches are also included, they triumphed four times over Llandudno, and three times each over Buckley and Llangefni.

The threat of a deduction of 21 pts hung over their heads for months. This failed to deter them as they churned out win after win. They eventually took the league by a mammoth 19pts and one feels that had it been necessary they would have managed the 21pts.

Port won 28 league games out of 32. At home it was a case of 16 games played and 16 wins. Only AirBus and Halkyn managed league wins against them. Flint and Holyhead also join the roll of honour as clubs who managed to take a point.

The only cup defeat came at the hands of Glantraeth in the Welsh Cup.

Arguably the performance of the season was at Llanelian Road where Colwyn Bay were trounced 4-1 and four wonderful goals, including the ‘Harrison Special’, were scored.

Discipline has been exemplary earning the team the accolade of Cymru Alliance team of the season. There have been no red cards, a credit to the players and, as has been rightly referred to in this site’s discussion page, to manager Viv Williams.

There has only been one long term injury- Danny Hughes with a broken foot- and this is a sign of the fitness of the team who have been so well prepared by Osian Roberts. No one exemplifies this more than outstanding skipper Mike Foster who has played in all but one of Port’s matches this season and he spent that one game on the bench raring to get on the pitch! How many goals have come as a result of Mike’s corners? Is there o football anorak out there keeping count?

The spirit of the club is exemplified also by, Supporters’ Player of the Year, Lee Webber who insisted on playing despite shingles in his eye.

This has been a squad achievement and all deserve our congratulations.

Viv Williams was set the task of restoring Welsh Premier status for the club and has completed the first step of his quiet revolution in style. He knows the challenges ahead in a more competitive league and we wish him luck as he prepares to establish this club at a higher level.
