Rownd Gyn-derfynol Cwpan Academi Cymru Dan-16 / U-16 Welsh Academy Cup Semi Final
Connah's Quay Nomads ... 1 Porthmadog ... 3
Iwan Lane '55
Cai Jones '67, '90.
Mewn brwydr galed rhwng dau dîm talentog, ar gae’r Oval, Caernarfon
llwyddodd tîm Dan-16 Porthmadog ennill lle yn Ffeinal Cwpan Academi Cymru
drwy guro eu cyfoedion o Gei Conna o 3-1. Ond nid yw’r sgôr yn dweud y stori
gyfan gan ni ddaeth 3ydd gôl Port tan 3 munud i mewn i amser anafiadau pan
gymerodd Cai Jones fantais o bêl dda i fewn i’r blwch o’r dde i daranu’r bêl i
gefn y rhwyd o 15 llath. Roedd Port wedi cychwyn y gêm yn dda Iwan ac am yr
ugain munud agoriadol wedi edrych yn debycach i agor y sgorio ond gyda 25 munud
wedi mynd manteisiodd Cei Conna ar gamgymeriad yn y cefn i agor y sgorio. O hyn
ymlaen tan hanner amser hogiau Cei Conna oedd yn rheoli ac yn edrych yn debygol
o sgorio eto. Ond daeth Port allan ar ôl yr egwyl yn benderfynol o ddod a’r sgôr
yn gyfartal. Daeth y cyfle ar ôl 55 munud wrth i amddiffynnwr lawio’r bêl gan
rhoi cic o’r smotyn i Port. Tarodd Iwan Lane y bêl i’r rhwyd gyda ergyd gywir.
Er fod y chwarae yn mynd o un pen i’r llall ar ôl 67 munud Port sgoriodd yr ail
gôl holl bwysig wrth i Cai Jones basio’n gelfydd i roi’r Jac Jones gweithgar
drwodd i guro golwr Cei Conna gyda ergyd dda. Port oedd ar y blaen am y tro
cyntaf ond roedd y deg munud olaf yn llawn tensiwn wrth i Cei Conna ddal i
frwydro -tan i Cai Jones sgorio trydedd gôl Port a gwneud y fuddugoliaeth yn
sicr.

In a hard fought semi-final, between two talented teams at Caernarfon Town’s
Oval ground Porthmadog U-16’s secured a place in the Welsh Academies Final by
defeating their Connah’s Quay counterparts by 3-1. The score line does not tell
the whole story as the third Port goal came deep into injury time when a cross
from the right was played into the box for Cai Jones to settle the game with a
powerful strike. Port had started the game well and for the first 20 minutes
looked the more likely to open the scoring but after 25 minutes the Nomads took
advantage of an error to open the scoring. From then on to half time the Nomads
took charge and might have increased their lead. But straight from the start of the
second period Port piled on the pressure and when a Nomads defender handled in the
box Iwan Lane levelled the scores with a well struck 55th minute spot kick. Play
was end to end but with 67 minutes gone Cai Jones slipped the ball through for the
hard working Jac Jones to burst into the box and take his chance well putting Port
in the driving seat. The final ten minutes was full of tension as the Nomads fought
hard to get back on level terms and this continued until Cai Jones finally made the
game safe.

Jordy Wood

David Owen
Aeth y tîm Dan-12 drwodd i rownd gynderfynol y gystadleuaeth gyda perfformiad
ardderchog yn Cefn Mawr. Ar ôl dim ond 10 munud sgoriodd Jordy Wood o
groesiad Steffan Owen i’w rhoi ar y blaen. Dwy funud yn ddiweddarach sgoriodd
Meilir Williams yr ail yn codi’r bêl dros y golwr ar ôl derbyn pas Liam
Murphy. Er eu bod yn edrych y tîm cryfaf ni ychwanegwyd gôl arall tan dwy
funud i fewn i’r ail hanner pan rhwydodd David Owen y dilyn croesiad arall
gan Steffan Owen. Am gyfnod wedyn bu Ifan Williams, golwr Port, yn brysur
wrth i Cefn wthio mlaen a 15 munud o’r diwedd fe cawsant eu gôl. Ond
ymatebodd Port gyda ail gôl Meilir Williams gan wneud y gêm yn ddiogel.
The U-12’s reached the semi-finals of the competition with another excellent
performance at Cefn Mawr. After only 10 minutes they went ahead with Jordy
Wood converting a Steffan Owen cross. Two minutes later Meilir Williams added
a second with a chip over the keeper after receiving from Liam Murphy. The
continued to dominate but did not score again until two minutes after the
break when David Owen netted following another Steffan Owen cross. Cefn then
pushed forward more giving Port keeper Ifan Williams far more to do and with
15 minutes left they scored to cut the deficit. But as the home side pushed
forward Port responded with another Meilir Williams goal to make the game safe.

George Sutherns
Aron Griffiths
James Rankin
Trefnwyd y gêm hon ar y funud olaf ac o’r herwydd roedd y tîm Dan 14 yn brin o
rhai o’r chwaraewyr arferol. Felly cafodd pedwar eu cyfle cyntaf i’Academi.
Roedd tempo cyflym i’r gêm gyda Port y mynd â’r gêm i wrthwynebwyr a’u curodd
4-0 yn ddiweddar. Gwobrwywyd eu hymdrech ar ôl 10 munud pan saethodd George
Sutherns yn bwerus i’r rhwyd ar ôl derbyn pas Aron Evans. Daeth yr ail pan g
urodd Aron Griffiths amddiffynnwr ar y chwith gan saethu yn uchel i’r rhwyd.
Daeth y drydedd o gic gornel Cain Thomas i’r postyn agosaf lle roedd James
Rankin i rwydo gyda foli. Roedd diffyg eilyddion yn golygu fod hogiau Port yn
dechrau blino tra roedd Cefn yn medru newid eu chwaraewyr. Daeth Cefn fwy i’r
gêm a llwyddo i dynnu dwy gôl yn ôl. Ond dal allan am y fuddugoliaeth gwnaeth
Port. Rhaid tynnu sylw at berfformiad George Sutherns yn arwain y lein a hefyd
Callum Evanson, Josh Rankin, James Rankin a Cain Thomas yn chware i’r Academi am
y tro cyntaf. Ond rhaid pwysleisio mai buddugoliaeth tîm oedd hwn. Da iawn
hogiau.
For this hastily arranged match Porthmadog U14s found themselves short of some
regular players and debuts were handed to four boys new to the Academy. The game
itself was played at a great tempo and Porthmadog showed their intent to take the
game to Druids who had beaten them 4-0 a few weeks ago. Their efforts were
rewarded after 10 minutes when George Sutherns latched onto a through ball played
from midfield by Aron Evans and unleashed a fierce shot that left the Druids’
goalkeeper with no chance. A second goal came when Aron Griffiths picked up the
ball on the left, beat his defender and from a tight angle lashed the ball high
into the Druids’ net. The third goal came from a corner taken by Cain Thomas
towards the near post where James Rankin met it perfectly and unleashed an
unstoppable volley into the back of the net. The lack of substitutes began to show
as the Porthmadog lads began to tire and Druids who were able to rest their boys by
changing personnel came more into the game and clawed back two goal Port. managed
to hold out for a very well deserved victory. Special mention must be made of
George Sutherns for the way he led the line and Callum Evason, Josh Rankin, James
Rankin and Cain Thomas who all started for the first time. But I must stress that
this was a team victory, well done all the lads.
Chris Jones. Head Coach Porthmadog Academy Under 14s.

Jac Jones (2)
Dylan Williams (p)
Aeth Port Dan-16 drwodd i’r rownd gynderfynol diolch i gôl, gan Jac Jones, pum munud
cyn ddiwedd yr amser ychwanegol. Cefn ddechreuodd orau gan fynd ar y blaen ar ôl dim
ond 5 munud ond yn raddol daeth Port fwy i’r gêm gyda Jac Jones yn dod â’r sgôr y
gyfartal ar ôl 25 munud. Ond yn dilyn blerwch yn amddiffyn Port aeth Cefn yn ôl ar y
blaen cyn yr egwyl. Ar y cyfan Port oedd yn rheoli yn yr ail hanner a daeth Dylan
Williams â’r sgôr yn cyfartal gyda cic o’r smotyn. Aeth y gêm wedyn i amser
ychwanegol a torrodd Jac Jones i lawr y cae i roi’r fuddugoliaeth i hogiau Port.
Enillodd y tîm Dan-16 pob un o’u gemau grwp a gwnaethant yn dda iawn i guro tîm cryf
y Derwyddon a oedd cynt wedi’u curo o 3-0 mewn gêm cynghrair.
A goal in extra-time by Jac Jones with only 5 minutes remaining secured Port’s place
in the semi-final. Cefn had started the brighter and went ahead after only 5 minutes
but Port gradually got themselves back into the game with Jac Jones scoring after 25
minutes to level the scores. Sloppy defending allowed Druids back into the lead just
before the interval. Port were mainly in control in the second period and levelled
the scores thanks to a penalty by Dylan Williams. This took the game into extra-time
and Jac Jones’ break away goal gave Port the victory. The U-16’s remained unbeaten
through their group matches and did well against a strong Druids team who had
previously beaten them in a league match by 3-0.

George Sutherns
Chwaraewyd Cwpan yr Academi ar y brif gae ar Y Traeth. Sul, 22
Mawrth 2009.
O’r cychwyn gwnaeth y tîm Dan 14 yn fawr o’u cyfle i chwarae ar
gae mawr Y Traeth gan ddefnyddio’u asgellwyr yn dda a gorfodi
Caernarfon i amddiffyn. Roedd Aron Griffiths yn rhedeg canol y cae
a George Sutherns yn gweithio’n galed, yn arwain y llinell flaen
yn dda iawn. Roedd hi ddim yn syndod felly pan aeth Port ar y blaen
diolch i gôl ardderchog gan Tomos Llywelyn Jones yn reoli’r bêl ar
ei frest cyn ei tharo i gornel y rhwyd gyda’i droed chwith.
Yn yr ail hanner crëwyd nifer o gyfleoedd a wedyn ei gwastraffu –
neu cael eu harbed gan golwr ardderchog Caernarfon. Ond o’r diwedd
cafodd ei guro ar ôl 50 munud diolch i gôl ardderchog gan Aron
Griffiths a dorrodd i lawr y chwith cyn saethu i gornel uchaf y
rhwyd. Pum munud yn ddiweddarach roedd y gêm yn ddiogel pan
sgoriodd George Sutherns. Gêm yw mwynhau oedd hon wedi’i chwarae
mewn ysbryd ardderchog. Diolch i Terry Williams am y ffordd y
gwnaeth ddyfarnu’r gêm a diolch hefyd i’r panel o ddyfarnwyr sydd
yn sicrhau fod yna gyfle i’r hogiau gael chwarae. Diolch hefyd am y
gefnogaeth o’r eisteddle sydd yn cael eu werthfawrogi gan y timau
a’r hyfforddwyr.

This much postponed eliminator in the Academies’ Cup Competition was
finally played on the main pitch on Sunday 22 March 2009.
Straight from the kick off the Porthmadog U14s settled into a
pattern of play ideally suited to the wide open spaces of the Traeth,
using their wide players to good effect to keep Caernarfon on the
defensive. Aron Griffiths in particular bossed the midfield and
George Sutherns, showing a great workrate, led the line excellently.
It was no surprise when on 25 minutes the deadlock was broken with a
brilliantly taken goal by Tomos Llewelyn Jones. A Port. corner was
cleared to the edge of the box where Tomos controlled the ball on his
chest and unleashed a left foot volley that screamed into the top
corner.
In the second half Porthmadog continued in the same vein and created
a number of chances which were either spurned or saved by the
excellent Caernarfon Goalkeeper who kept his side in the game on a
number of occasions. Finally though he was beaten by a great goal from
Aron Griffiths. Embarking on a strong run down the left Aron broke
into the penalty box and unleashed an unstoppable drive across the
goalkeeper into the top corner. This was after 50 minutes and 5
minutes later the win was sealed when George got just reward for all
his hard work by scoring the third after a goalmouth melee.
This was a very enjoyable game to watch with both sides playing
football as it should be played in a great spirit. The game was
further enhanced by the outstanding refereeing performance by Terry
Williams. We are very grateful to Terry and our panel of referees who
give up their Sunday mornings to make sure our lads get a game of
football.
Finally may I also say that the support from the stands from parents
and friends was very much appreciated by the boys and by the coaches.
Eddie Blackburn (With thanks to Chris Jones)
