08/10/08 Rhagolwg: Newi Derwyddon Cefn / Preview: Newi Cefn Druids ![]() On Friday, Porthmadog start on a series of vitally important matches where they should be expected to pick up points against other clubs who are likely to figure in mid table or lower. Cefn Druids visit on Friday followed by games against Prestatyn, Newtown and Caernarfon. Though nothing can be taken for granted in football a home match against Cefn who have not enjoyed the best of starts should be a good opportunity to pick up three points. But be warned we probably said the same thing a year ago and then performed dreadfully to allow the visitors to return to Wrexham with the three points. Another warning came this week when the Druids defeated Newtown and the dangerous pair of Mike Heverin and Chris McGinn were on the score sheet. Heverin also has a hat trick to his name against Port. But Port supporters can take comfort from the fact that Rowley and Jiws were in goal scoring mood against Caernarfon and there was a far better all round performance against Bangor despite not being at full strength. Lets hope the lads are at their best on Friday and can pick up all three points. 05/10/08 Rhagolwg: Bangor / Preview Bangor City ![]() With Port no longer able to progress in the League Cup Tuesday’s tie against Bangor might have lost some of its edge. However Bangor are strongly placed to move into the Quarter Final stage and a local derby can never be anything but important for both participants. Port have much to prove after suffering a six goal defeat at the Traeth in August and conceding three at Farrar Road inside 30 minutes in the first leg. Manager Paul Whelan will be looking for more of the effort shown in the second period of that game. It was atrocious weather for defending at the Traeth on Saturday against Caernarfon and he will be looking for a tighter performance on Tuesday. His strike force of John Rowley and Marc Lloyd Williams have started well having scored six goals each. Bangor have however made a great start to the season and are in fourth place in the WPL table. Les Davies and Chris Sharp will test the Port defence and this game will be a useful yardstick for Port to measure the progress made since the clubs last met. 05/10/08 Tudalen newydd am yr Academi / New page on the Academy Mae tudalen newydd wedi'i ychwanegu i'r safle swyddogol a fydd yn cynnwys gwybodaeth am Academi'r clwb. Bydd y dudalen newydd yn cynnwys canlyniadau, adroddiadau a lluniau am dimau'r Academi. Dilynwch y ddolen hon i fynd draw i'r dudalen newydd. A new page has been added to the official site which will include information on the club's academy. The new page will include results, reports and pictures on the Academy's teams. Follow this link to go to the new page. 05/10/08 Port yn Wrecsam yn Rownd 3 / Port travel to Wrexham for Round 3 ![]() Hanes y clybiau eraill o Wynedd gan gychwyn efo deiliaid y gwpan Bangor sydd wedi cael gêm arall adref y tro yma yn erbyn Garden Village clwb o ardal Llanelli. Cafodd y ddau arall o Wynedd hefyd gemau adref gyda Pwllheli yn croesawu Caerfyrddin a phencampwyr UGC, Llanelli, yn teithio i Tywyn/Bryncrug. Porthmadog have been drawn against the Wrexham based club Lex XI who defeated Glan Conwy. It will be the first time Port has faced the Cymru Alliance club since their promotion season of 2001/02. This will not be an easy tie as Lex have made an excellent start to the season and are currently in third place in the Cymru Alliance behind leaders Holyhead Hotspurs and second placed Bala Town. They remain unbeaten so far this season with four wins and two draws from their six league matches. Of the other Gwynedd clubs in Round 3, Bangor City have again been drawn at home and will entertain Llanelli area club, Garden Village. The two other Gwynedd clubs are also at home with Pwllheli entertaining Carmarthen Town and Tywyn/Bryncrug welcoming the WPL Champions and last season’s finalists Llanelli. 03/10/08 Gig Gai Toms wedi'i ganslo / Gai Toms gig cancelled Mae'r noson gyda Gai Toms a oedd i fod i gael ei chynnal yn y Clwb Cymdeithasol ar nos Sadwrn 4 Hydref wedi cael ei chanslo. The evening with Gai Toms which was to have been held at the Porthmadog Football Club clubhouse on Saturday evening 4 October has been cancelled. 03/10/08 Gemau'r Academi wedi eu canslo / Academy matches cancelled Ma gemau timau'r academi yn erbyn gwrthwynebwyr o Gap Cei Conna a oedd i fod i gael eu cynnal ddydd Sul wedi cael eu canslo. The academy teams' matches against their Gap Connah's Quay counterparts, wich were to be held on Sunday have been cancelled. 02/10/08 Rhagolwg: Cwpan Cymru / Preview: Welsh Cup ![]() The second round draw brings neighbours Caernarfon to the Traeth on Saturday with a 2pm kick off. Both sides will be coming off heavy defeats, the Cofis at Prestatyn and Port at Oswestry. Both defences have been guilty o leaking goals in the WPL this season with Port conceding 20 goals and Caernarfon 22 goals. Both teams have gone down 6-0 to TNS but whereas Caernarfon have lost by the odd goal to Welshpool and Airbus, Port have chalked up victories over the same two clubs. This season, excluding the top three or four clubs, there has been little consistency in the results and, as this is a Cup game, form can largely be discounted. A Cup game also gives both sides a break from the league but there will be pressure, as this is a derby game and both managements will be aware of the financial rewards a good Cup run can bring. Let’s hope for an exciting game with ‘Sgorio’ cameras present, a good crowd and the right result. 01/10/08 Yr Ail Dîm ym mis Medi / Reserves September Round-up Dim ond dwy gêm a chwaraewyd ym mis Medi gan fod y gemau yn erbyn Bodedern a Llanfairfechan wedi’u gohirio. Enillwyd y ddwy gêm a chwaraewyd, gyda’r gyntaf o’r ddwy ar Y Traeth yn erbyn Bontnewydd yn gorffen yn 4-2 a Mark Cook a Danny Rylance yn sgorio dwy gôl yr un. Ar ôl i Matthew Hughes, prif sgoriwr y tymor diwethaf, ymuno â chlwb Dyffryn Nantlle, mae’r cyfrifoldeb am ganfod y rhwyd wedi disgyn ar ysgwyddau Mark Cook a Danny Rylance. Yn y gêm arall a chwaraewyd, cafwyd buddugoliaeth o 1-0 dros Bethel, y clwb sydd yn y 5ed safle. Ar ddiwedd y mis, mae’r Ail Dîm yn dal yn ddiguro ac yn y trydydd safle yn y tabl gyda 17 pwynt o’r 5 fuddugoliaeth a 2 gêm gyfartal. Mae hyn yn eu gadael chwe pwynt tu ôl i Flaenau Ffestiniog ar y brig gyda Port wedi chwarae dwy gêm yn llai. The reserves only played twice in September, with the games against Bodedern and Llanfairfechan being postponed. The two games played ended in wins for Porthmadog. The first, at the Traeth, was a 4-2 win over Bontnewydd with Mark Cook and Danny Rylance both scoring twice. Now that Matthew Hughes, last season’s leading scorer, has switched to Nantlle Vale the responsibility for finding the net has fallen on the shoulders of Mark Cook and Danny Rylance. The other game played this month, also at the Traeth, ended in a single goal win for Port over 5th placed Bethel. The reserves end the month unbeaten in 3rd spot with 17 points from 5 wins and two draws. This leaves them 6 points behind leaders Blaenau Amateurs who have played two more games. 30/09/08 Dau o dimau’r Academi yn curo timau Bangor / Two Academy teams beat Bangor teams ![]() After the successful start for the Academy’s teams at Newtown, some of the teams achieved further success against Bangor last Sunday. The under-14s dished out a 5-0 thrashing and the under-16s also notched up a 1-0 win. Unfortunately, the under-12s suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat. The academy teams will be on show once again this weekend as they welcome Gap Connah’s Quay to Clwb Chwaraeon Madog, with the under-12 and under-14 matches kicking off at 2pm, and the under-16s following at 3.30pm. 29/09/08 Boskin yn ôl yn Llangefni / Boskin returns to Llangefni ![]() Richard Hughes, who returned to Porthmadog from Llangefni during the January 2008 transfer window, has decided to rejoin the Anglesey club. Richard, who has made two starts this season, joined Porthmadog for the first time in the 1994-95 season. A genuine utility player he has been an excellent servant of the club and will be especially remembered for his winning goal in the final game of the 2007-08 season against Rhyl to help secure Porthmadog’s WPL status. The club and supporters wish him well at Cae Bob Parry. 25/09/08 Rhagolwg v TNS / Preview: v TNS ![]() Wrth edrych ymlaen dywedodd y rheolwr, Paul Whelan wrth bapur yr “Herald”. “Bydd yn gêm anodd iawn, mae TNS yn chwarae pêl-droed da ac mae eu cae artiffisial yn fantais iddynt. (Ond) dydyn ni ddim yn bwriadu gorwedd i lawr a gadael iddyn nhw roi cweir inni.” Mae profiad y gorffennol yn awgrymu fod Port yn llwyddo pan maen’t yn cau TNS i lawr yng nghanol y cae, gan eu rhwystro rhag rhedeg y gêm. John Leah ydy eu chwaraewr mwyaf peryglus a bydd yn ddominyddu’r canol os byddwn yn rhoi lle iddo. Bu ciciau gosod yn ffynhonnell dda i Port yn y gorffennol. Wrth roi pwysau ar amddiffyn TNS yn yr agwedd hon o’r gêm llwyddwyd i sgorio sawl gôl. Ond o gofio mai dim ond un gôl sydd wedi’i sgorio i rhwyd TNS y tymor hwn yn y gynghrair, bydd hon yn gêm arbennig o anodd. Ewch i ![]() A journey to Oswestry to play TNS is travelled in hope rather than expectation. However football history is littered with shock results and that is precisely why we delight in the game. Over the years, Port have provided a few of these shocks, including the dismissal of the professionals from the Welsh Cup and the League Cup in the same season. There have been other results but we will not dwell on these now! Looking ahead manager Paul Whelan told the “Caernarfon and Denbigh”, It’s going to be a very tough game, they are a good footballing side and their artificial pitch is an advantage to them. (But) We’re not going to lie down and let them roll over us.” Past experience suggests that Port have achieved their best results when they have closed TNS down in midfield and stopped them dominating the game. John Leah is their danger man and if given space in midfield he will run the game. Set pieces, corners and free kicks, have been another key area for Port. Pressure in these areas has provided a means of breaking down a very tight defence. But it will be a very difficult game as TNS have only conceded one league goal so far this season and that tells its own story. Visit ![]() 24/09/08 Hughes yn ymuno â Dyffryn Nantlle / Hughes Joins Vale ![]() In a surprise move Porthmadog striker Mathew Hughes has joined Nantlle Vale days before the transfer window closes. The striker scored 40 goals to become the Gwynedd League leading scorer last term. The timing of the move is particularly surprising as Mathew has just broken into the first team squad this year. Hughes had been chased by Cymru Alliance teams Glantraeth and Llangefni but has decided to leave for Welsh League side Nantlle Vale who have experienced difficulty recruiting players. He will join former Porthmadog players Andrew Jones (Junior) and Steven Paul Williams who is manager at Vale this season. We wish Mathew all the best in the future. 24/09/08 Gai Toms yn y Clwb / Gai Toms at the Clubhouse. ![]() One of Wales' most innovative and talented artists will be appearing at the Porthmadog FC social club on Saturday 4th. October. This will be Gai Toms and his Band's first appearance at the venue which was opened last September and has over that time featured several Welsh musical acts. Gai was one of the founding members and mainstays of the popular Blaenau Ffestiniog band, Anweledig, and subsequently became folk rock act Mim Twm Llai, gaining critical acclaim and widespread popularity. More recently he now appears under his own name, Gai Toms, and in August released his latest CD -'Rhwng y Llygru a 'r Glasu' (loosely translated 'between pollution and greenery') which is an eco concept album. This further underlines his stature as a singer and songwriter of some note who is not afraid to innovate and develop. Tickets for the evening are available from local shops or by phoning 07810057444. 24/09/08 Port ar Sgorio Cymru eto / Port on Sgorio Cymru again. Fel gyda’r gêm yn erbyn y Trallwng, ein gêm yng Nghwpan Cymru yn erbyn Caernarfon ddydd Sadwrn 4 Hydref fydd y brif gêm ar Sgorio Cymru, felly bydd y gic gyntaf yn cael ei symud ymlaen i 2pm. Just like last week for the Welshpool game the Welsh Cup tie against Caernarfon on Saturday October 4th will be the featured main game on Sgorio Cymru, therefore kick-off will again be brought forward to 2pm. 22/09/08 Dechrau gwych i’r academi a treialon dan-9 a dan-11 / Excellent start for the academy and U-9 and U-11 trials Enillodd pob un o dimau Academi Porthmadog ar eu taith lawr i’r Drenewydd ddydd Sul, eu gemau cyntaf y tymor newydd. Enillodd y tîm dan-12 o 6-2, enillodd yr hogiau dan-14 o 3-1 a’r tîm dan-16 o 3-0. Da iawn i bawb a gymrodd ran. Bydd yr Academi’n cynnal treialon ar gyfer eu timau dan-9 a dan-11 ar 26/09/08. Bydd y treialon yn cael eu cynnal yng Nghlwb Chwaraeon Madog rhwng 6.15pm a 7.15. Rhaid i chwaraewyr fod yn gysylltiedig efo tîm yn y gynghrair iau. All three of Porthmadog's Academy teams won on their travels to Newtown on Sunday, their first games of the new season. The Under 12's won 6-2, Under 14's won 3-1 and the under 16's won 3-0. Well done to all concerned. The Academy will be holding trials for their under-9 and under-11 teams on the 26/09/08. Trials will be held at the Clwb Chwaraeon Madog at 6:15pm till 7:15pm. If successful at trials training will then start on the 1/10/08 and will be held every Wednesday night at a charge of £2 a session to cover the cost of facilities. 22/09/08 Y tîm dartiau yn hedfan yn llwyddiannus / Darts team off to a flying start ![]() The newly established Porthmadog FC darts team, playing in the Porthmadog and District Darts League, got their season off to a flying start last week with an impressive win in their opening game when they visited one of the fancied teams Cross Foxes B of Garn. They won by a margin of 6 legs to 2. The home matches of the newly formed team will be held at the Clubhouse. Best wishes to them in their first season. 22/09/08 Croeso cynnes i’r newydd ddyfodiad / A warm welcome to the newcomer ![]() Congratulations to Richie Owen and his partner Tina on the birth of their baby daughter Holly Grace. Richie missed the game at Airbus because of the new arrival. We wish all three the very best for their future. Regretfully we have no photograph of the beautiful baby or of Tina so unfortunately you will have to make do with the one of the proud dad. 19/09/08 Mel yw cyfarwyddwr yr Academi / Mel is academy director ![]() Porthmadog Assistant Manager, Mel Jones, has been appointed new director of the club’s academy. Until last season, Mel was in charge of Bangor's Academy, a post which he'd held for a number of years, so he brings with him a lot of experience to the role. The Academy’s under 12, 14 and 16 teams play their first matches of the season, against Newtown this Sunday (21/9/08), k.o. 1pm. Further details on the team of coaches that will work along side Mel will be available on the website soon. 17/09/08 Rhagolwg: v Y Trallwng am 2 o’r gloch / Preview: v Welshpool Kick off 2pm ![]() Er gwaethaf safon y chwarae llynedd, llwyddodd Port i sicrhau 4 pwynt yn erbyn Y Trallwng, gan gynnwys 3 phwynt ar gae Maesydre gydag un o’u perfformiadau gorau. Cafwyd un pwynt adref hefyd a hynny er gwaethaf rhai penderfyniadau go ryfedd gan y dyfarnwr. Bydd Port yn edrych i adeiladu ar y fuddugoliaeth a’r gwelliant amlwg a ddangoswyd nos Wener. Roedd yn dda gweld y ddau flaenwr, Jiws a John Rowley, yn canfod y rhwyd, ac o’r pwys mwyaf hefyd oedd peidio ildio gôl, a hynny am y tro cyntaf y tymor hwn. Cofiwch fod y gic gyntaf am 2 o’r gloch ddydd Sadwrn gan mai Port v Y Trallwng fydd y brif gêm ar Sgorio Cymru ar S4C. Ewch i ![]() Having recorded their first victory of the season at Broughton on Friday, supporters will be looking for a similar result on Saturday when Welshpool Town are the visitors. But the Mid-Wales club will as always provide a stern test hoping to improve on their one win and two draws so far this season. Their leading scorer with 4 goals is former Port player Paul Roberts. Welshpool are also one of three clubs (Caernarfon and Neath are the other two) who have conceded more goals than Porthmadog in league games this season. Welshpool have conceded 14 goals to Port’s 13. Despite their poor form last season, Port picked up 4 points against Welshpool, winning with one of the season’s best performances at Maesydre and earning a point at home despite some very strange refereeing decisions. Port will be looking to continue the improved form and build on their first win of the season. It was good to see strikers Jiws and John Rowley finding the net and equally important was the first clean sheet of the season. Don’t forget it’s a 2 pm kick off on Saturday as Port v Welshpool is the main match on S4C’s Sgorio Cymru. Visit ![]() 17/09/08 Oes gennych atgofion o gyfnod Mel Charles? / Have you any anecdotes from the Mel Charles era? ![]() Mae’n siwr fod gan chwaraewyr hyn atgofion melys a doniol o’r “Oes Aur” yn hanes clwb Porthmadog. Os fedrwch helpu cysylltwch a gwefan y clwb gwefeistr@cpdporthmadog.com neu yn uniongyrchol gyda Colin Leslie drwy e-bost: cleslie@scotsman.com. The website has received a request for information from journalist Colin Leslie, currently working with Mel Charles on his autobiography which will be published early next summer. He’s looking for any anecdotes, pictures or stats from Charles’s time at the Traeth. Colin said "I have already found the excellent poem written about Mel in 1967, but any additional material would be most welcome”. We are sure that older supporters have many anecdotes of this “Golden Age” in Porthmadog football. If you are able to help contact the club on webmaster@porthmadogfc.com or Colin Leslie directly at his e-mail address: cleslie@scotsman.com. 15/09/08 Caernarfon yng Nghwpan Cymru / Caernarfon in the Welsh Cup ![]() The draw has been made for the Second Round of the Welsh Cup, and Porthmadog will face a massive derby match against local rivals Caernarfon. The game will be played on the Traeth on Saturday 4 October. This is the second consecutive season for Port to face opposition from the Welsh Premier League at this early stage of the competition. A good cup run like the one we had during the 2006/07 season would give the club a huge boost as big money is now up for grabs in this competition. 15/09/08 Ail Dîm yn y Cwpanau / Reserves up for the Cups Mewn cystadleuaeth newydd sy'n cael ei chyflwyno am y tro cyntaf y tymor hwn, bydd yr Ail Dîm yn croesawu Llansannan, tîm o Uwch Gynghrair Clwyd, i’r Traeth yn y Rownd 1af. Bydd yr Ail Dîm yn cystadlu yn y gystadleuaeth newydd hon, sef Cwpan Ganolradd Gogledd Cymru, yn lle Cwpan Iau Gogledd Cymru gan fod y gystadleuaeth honno bellach yn cael ei neilltuo i glybiau sy’n chwarae yn is yn y pyramid. Bydd y gêm yn cael ei chwarae cyn neu ar 25 Hydref. Mae’r Ail Dîm hefyd yn chwarae yn erbyn tîm arall o Uwch Gynghrair Clwyd yng Nghwpan Barritt. Y tro hwn byddant i ffwrdd ym Mochdre ar gyfer y Rownd 1af a bydd y gêm yn cael ei chwarae cyn neu ar 22 Tachwedd. The draw has been made for a new competition being introduced for this season, the North Wales Intermediate Cup. The Reserves will be involved in this competition this season instead of in the North Wales Junior Cup which has now been reserved for clubs who play lower down the pyramid. The first round tie will be played on or before October 25th and the Reserves have been drawn at home against Clwyd Premier League side Llansannan. They have also been drawn against a team from the Clwyd Premier League in the Barritt Cup. This time they will be away at Mochdre Sports with the match being played on or before November 22nd 11/09/08 Ymateb Port i sylwadau Deakin / Port respond to Deakin's comments ![]() “Fel clwb rydym yn teimlo ein bod yn hynod o uchelgeisiol, wrth feddwl ein bod newydd fuddsoddi degau o filoedd o bunnoedd i godi “clubhouse” gyda'r bwriad o godi arian ychwanegol i'r clwb. Dim mater o fod yn uchelgeisiol neu beidio ydi hwn,- bod yn realistig yw’r peth. Ar hyn o bryd nid yw ein rheolwr Paul Whelan wedi cwblhau’r cymwysterau UEFA, felly gallwn ni ddim cael y drwydded a byddai’r clwb yn taflu £250 i fwrdd heb angen.” Mae’n cyfeirio at y gwahanol bwyslais a roddwyd gan un o swyddogion eraill yr FAW, Andrew Howard, sy’n gyfrifol am broses drwyddedu’r Gymdeithas, a ddywedodd, “Mae’r chwe clwb sydd wedi penderfynu peidio ceisio am Drwydded UEFA wedi gwneud y penderfyniad cywir mwy na thebyg. Ni allai yr un o’r chwech gwrdd a’r meini prawf ar gyfer rheolwyr ar hyn o bryd na chwaith phan fydd yr asesiad yn cymryd lle yn Ebrill a Mai, heblaw eu bod yn newid rheolwr.” Ychwanegodd Gerallt Owen “Byddwn yn cytuno cant y cant gyda Andrew Howard.” Mae’r Gymdeithas Bêl-droed felly wedi gadael y cefnogwyr mewn penbleth o ran pwy sy’n siarad drostynt. ![]() “As a club we consider that we have been very ambitious and have only recently invested thousands of pounds in a new clubhouse as a means of raising money to further develop the club. It is not a matter of ambition or otherwise but rather being realistic. At the moment our manager, Paul Whelan, does not have the necessary UEFA coaching qualifications and that means we cannot gain an UEFA Licence. It would be a case of throwing away £250 for no purpose.” He points to the totally different emphasis made by another FAW official, Andrew Howard, who is responsible for the FAW licensing process who said, “The six clubs that have decided not to go for the UEFA Licence have probably made the correct decision. None of the clubs meet the Managerial Criteria at the moment and neither will they when the Licence is assessed in April and May, unless a new Manager comes in.” Gerallt Owen added “I agree a hundred per cent with Andrew Howard’s point of view.” Supporters are, therefore, left to wonder who speaks for the FAW. 10/09/08 Eifion Jones yn ymuno / Eifion Jones signs ![]() The protracted saga regarding the signing of Eifion Jones from Caernarfon has eventually been resolved as the experienced defender signed on the dotted line to join the Traeth outfit yesterday (Tuesday). The former Blackpool, Bangor and Caernarfon centre half has been in a will he wont he sign situation for a couple of weeks and Paul Whelan is pleased that he has joined to bolster a defence that has leaked in 19 goals in six games so far this season. Also signing for Porthmadog is Iwan Williams who left for Newtown during the summer. |
